Xbox 360 and original Xbox: exploits and hardware mods

The Xbox 360 and the original Xbox can be jailbroken. Here you can read how that works in broad strokes, which methods exist, and what the risks are. We deliberately do not provide a step-by-step guide or downloads, just as with the PlayStation 5.

Xbox 360 (Fat, Slim, and E)

There are two types of methods:

  • A software exploit: Bad Update. This appeared in 2025 and works from a USB stick, without opening the console. According to sources, it only works on consoles with a specific software version (dashboard 17559). It is not permanent: after powering off, you have to execute it again, and programs often need to be modified before they run. The success rate varies by source and you sometimes have to make multiple attempts.
  • A hardware mod: RGH (Reset Glitch Hack). This is a modification to the console itself, which usually requires soldering and equipment to read and write the memory. The result is more permanent, but not every motherboard is supported. There are variants, such as RGH3.

With a modified Xbox 360, you can run homebrew programs, emulators, and alternative menus (dashboards). This gives you much more access to the system than through Developer Mode on the newer consoles.

Original Xbox (2001)

The first Xbox has been a beloved console for modders for years. Softmods exist that don’t require opening the console. With them, you can use alternative menus, emulators, and media players, among other things. The method varies by version of the console and the software.

Risks

  • Xbox Live ban. Microsoft can deny a modified console or account access to online services. Therefore, never use a modified console online without precautions.
  • A broken console. Especially with hardware mods, an error can render the console unusable.
  • Unreliable software. Files from unknown sources can be harmful.
  • Warranty. A modified console can be excluded from warranty.

What does the law say?

Circumventing technical protection may be prohibited, even for personal use, and copying games you haven’t purchased is always prohibited. Read the explanation at the risks and rules. That is general information and not legal advice.

What can you better do?

  • Do you only want to run your own apps and emulators? Then use Developer Mode on an Xbox One or Series S/X: official, without risk of a ban from a jailbreak.
  • Do you want to play old games you own yourself? Then read our guide for retro gaming and emulation.
What we don’t do here: no step-by-step guide for exploits, no downloads, and no links to utilities or game copies.
